QUITO, ECUADOR
CENIT is an Ecuadorian-run NGO located in an impoverished neighbourhood in the south of Quito, working to eradicate child labour and empower at-risk working children and their families by providing comprehensive educational, vocational, health, social and psychological services. CENIT was founded over 26 years ago and now has a number of different programs, including a homework help centre (CEA) and an accelerated school for children who have fallen behind by 3 years or more.
As a student you will, according to prior arrangements with CENIT staff, either assist with one-on-one and small group academic support in our homework centre, CEA, or work with one of the teachers in our school as a teacher's assistant in one particular class throughout your internship, helping with discipline, small group activities, planning of classwork etc.
CENIT has the contact details of a wide range of different accommodation options, including host families, rooms in share houses and private apartments. It is the students responsiblity to make contact with the accommodation provider and organise their stay.
Students would be able to take Spanish classes alongside their internship. There are a number of Spanish schools in Quito who would be able to organise this. Recommended is Banana Spanish, as many volunteers have found this organisation helpful and friendly. Individual classes cost around $7/hour (for volunteers!) or abour $5 for small group lessons.
